The Story Behind Our Name - Melomys

Have you ever wondered why our company is called Melomys?

Well, there's a story behind it.

The name Melomys is derived from the Bramble Cay melomys, the first casualty of human-caused climate change. The Bramble Cay melomys (Melomys rubicola), also known as the "little brown rat," was a rodent species found only on a tiny island off the coast of Australia. In 2019, the Australian goverment officially declared the species extinct. In fact, over 90% of the vegetation in the Bramble Cay has been lost due to rising sea levels and increased frequency of extreme weather events, both of which are attributed to climate change.

We decided to name our company Melomys as a reminder of our environmental mission and raise awareness about climate change's devastating effects. We strive to create innovative and sustainable products that minimize our environmental impact and ensure we do everything possible to do our part to prevent further species extinctions.

The Consequences of Climate Change

The fate of the Bramble Cay melomys should serve as a cautionary tale of the severe consequences of climate change if left unchecked. Climate change has become a pressing issue that has been making headlines more and more. Unfortunately, this is the devastating reality of our world today. If we don't take action now, we could see many more species go extinct due to rising sea levels, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and other impacts of climate change. That's why we're committed to being part of the solution toward a more sustainable world.

We believe that the Bramble Cay melomys should be the last casualty of human-caused climate change.

What can we do to prevent more extinctions?

The loss of the Bramble Cay melomys should serve as a wakeup call for us to take action against climate change.

While companies (including Melomys) should be held accountable for ensuring that their products don’t harm the planet, individual action still plays a crucial role (a leaked draft of the IPCC scientific report makes this apparent). Individual actions do matter and collectively, we can make a difference. Some things you can do in your daily life to help combat climate change are: recycling, driving less, eating less meat, wasting less food, using energy-efficient appliances, buying less, and using public transportation. In addition, Melomys offers a collection of apparel made from sustainable fabrics, and for every item sold, we plant 5 trees with our partner, One Tree Planted. Supporting our brand is one small way you can help make a difference.
